Brand sponsorship has been a huge debate in the African esports scene, with many concluding that African brands are just not evolving with global trends.

In the western world, brands are in a race to edge out competition by partnering with the esports industry, using tournaments and the teams as a new tool for marketing.

With the rapid growth of esports in Africa, many brands are yet to recognize this new opportunity, with an exception of just a few.

In Nigeria, West Africa, The AfroGamer and The Lagos Esports Forum have taken advantage of the mobile penetration statistics to host a Mobile Game Tournament tagged Android vs Apple.

The tournament allows mobile users battle it out in casual games such as Ludo King, 8 Ball pool and a local game, Naija Whot.

The tournament which runs between August 1st and August 16, has been identified by one of Nigeria’s prominent banks, WEMA.

The bank decided to the lead charge for brands in esports by becoming the official partner throught its ALAT platform.

The ALAT platform is Nigeria’s only fully digital bank, that provides all banking services anywhere to users who have access to the internet.

This developement has been received with excitement from gamers and esports stakeholders and many expect other African brands to take a cue from WEMA bank.
